SE Full

Best practice

Background, or My Cup Runneth Over

When an SE fills up, then users cannot write data into it. This can lead to problems such as the user's VO blacklisting the site, or other VOs being unable to write into the same (shared) space. In particular, if the ops VO cannot write into the SE, the SAM tests will fail. So unless the space really is dedicated to a single VO and they can cope with it filling up, it is good practice to not let the SE get too full.

Guidelines

  1. 70-90% full is considered good practice.
  2. Monitor not just for how full it is, but also for how quickly it is filling up.

What to do when it's full

  1. Find your [site contact] for the VO.
  2. Tell them about the problem

The VO may be able to do something about it, such as delete unused files, copy files to another location, etc. And at least they know what the problem is if they suddenly cannot write more data into the SE.
