GridPP Communities

A set of communities that GridPP works with

Previous content

ARC

Advanced Resource Connector, a product of the NorduGrid projects, and part of EMI

BES

Basic Execution Service, an OGF standard, using Web Services as the basic mode of communication, to send a JSDL job description.

EES

EMI Execution Service, an EMI special, essential an alternative to BES that doesn't use JSDL

EGI

European Grid Initiative, a body that exists to co-ordinate (and ensure interoperability) of grids across Europe.

EGI-Inspire

A particular EU funded project that is to set up the various networks of things that EGI will co-ordinate.

EMI

European Middleware Initiative, an EU funded project to build middleware. Contains ARC, dCache, gLite, UNICORE, AMGA, APEL, DPM and STORM.

gLite

A middleware provider.

GLUE

A language used for describing a Grid system. It's the language and data model used by BDII. Current use is in transition form Glue 1.3 to Glue 2.0.

NAREGI

The Japanese Grid movement. It's not exactly the same, but think of it as NGI-Japan, and that's a good model for it.

NGI

National Grid Initiative. A body whose existence is mandated by EGI in order that EGI can co-ordinate them.

NGS

National Grid Service - the JISC funded body with a Grid interested in the UK, no longer extant.

OGF

Open Grid Forum, formerly Global Grid Forum, the Grid standards Body.

OSG

Open Science Grid, the USA grid body. It's not quite, but consider it to be NGI-USA. It's also the name of the middleware that they use.

QCG

QosCosGrid, a grid middleware. Conforms to BES, has advanced reservations. Mostly used by NGI-PL and the MAPPER project.

RenKei

The Japanese Middleware. Conforms to BES.

UNICORE

German based middleware, not really used in the UK.

UMD

The EGI super-repo, where packages that have been tested in a production environment get to live.

WLCG

The Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (or Group). This is a body that co-ordiantes the 4 LHC VO's (ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and Alice). This is the only body that co-ordinates multiple VO's (to date, at any rate)
