A Transfer URL (or Transport URL) is a URL encoding the physical location of a file on a host. It's usually given by a Storage Element's SRM interface so that the client can actually go an retrieve the file from the host where it is physically located (which is not, generally, the same as the host where the SRM service runs). Transfer URLs encode the file transport protocol in the URL, e.g.,

gsiftp://pool2.scotgrid.ac.uk/gridstore/dteam/fooFile.2.122

In this case the file transport protocol is Grid FTP.
