A Storage URL is a specification of the physical location of a file, e.g.,

srm://se2-gla.scotgrid.ac.uk:8443/pnfs/scotgrid.ac.uk/data/dteam/users/graeme/file1

In the grid view of data management, users would not normally interact with Storage URLs, but with a Logical File Name. The File Catalog maps between these two entities.

SURLs can also be called physical file names or Site URLs.

Types of SURL URLs

  • SURLs for older gridftp (a.k.a. 'classic') storage elements began sfn://.
  • SURLs for newer SRM capable storage elements begin srm://.
