SouthGrid VO

How to get started Instructions. Users will first need to to apply for a grid certificate, then you apply to join the VO.

1 Apply for a grid cert. Look at this web page (on the provided by the UK NGS which explains about the certificates we use in GridPP) http://www.ngs.ac.uk/certoverview then go to the page https://ca.grid-support.ac.uk/cgi-bin/pub/pki?cmd=getStaticPage&name=index

Here select the 'Request a Certificate' tab. Select User Certificate Enter your name and select the RA at your institute (for example Oxford OeSC)

You need to enter a PIN which may be asked for by RA when you go to show your University Card/ Proof of Identification.

At some point you will have to set a passphrase which you will need to keep secret and will use to authenticate your self when using the grid.

The certificate request leaves a cookie in your web browser so when you get the email to say you have a new cert you need to retrieve it from the same web browser.

2 Once you have your certificate in your browser you can apply to join the SouthGrid VO.

See https://voms.gridpp.ac.uk:8443/voms/vo.southgrid.ac.uk/Login.do

Details of the VOMS service run by Manchester for Gridpp which SouthGrid uses are here.

3 In order to submit grid jobs you need to extract your grid certificate onto a User Interface (UI). ie a system that has the glite user interface software loaded. The NGS have a good guide to the steps to do that here: preparing-your-user-certificate-use-globus-toolkit

4 Now you can start to use the glite commands to test things out. See the Glite Documentation the user guide in particular. The chapter on Workload Management describes how to submit a job.
