From Web to Grid

Tue 25th March 2003

A series of five articles has been published by the Public Service Communication Agency (PSCA) on the subject of Grid Computing Technology.

In “Introducing the Grid” Les Vousden examines the potential benefits the grid can provide for business. “Authentication, Authorisation and Accounting” by Steven Newhouse looks at security in the grid and “Widening the Network of Information” by Peter Walters introduces the MammoGrid project.

In “From Web to Grid” Steve Lloyd discusses the development of a grid large enough to accomodate future scientific streams and in “Going Beyond the Internet” Fabrizio Gagliardi and Francois Grey explain the initiatives used in coping with the increased traffic of data.

The DTI has three main objectives in the next three years:

  • to promote and encourage a dynamic and successful economy;
  • to improve the relative international performance of the UK’s science and engineering base;
  • to ensure that the UK ranks in the top three most competitive energy markets in the EU and G7. Grid development clearly features as a major strand in the DTI’s long-term strategy.
