EGI Starts With A Bang

Tue 4 May 2010

The start of May, in some parts of Europe, marks the start of Summer. It is no different in the grid world with the European Grid Initiative (EGI) officially starting on the 1st of May. However EGEE wasn't going to end that easily and the collaboration's final meeting, the User Forum in Sweden, was certainly eventful.

Steven Newhouse, new EGI Project Director
Along with the new project and a new home (Amsterdam), grids in Europe have a new leader. During the User Forum the EGI partners chose Steven Newhouse (formerly EGEE technical director) as the new Director of EGI. Steven has been involved in grids for many years with a brief sojourn with Microsoft and will now lead European grids into a new future.

Held in the beautiful university town of Uppsala, the User Forum was to be the last hurrah for EGEE. The conference venue was the university's main building in the centre of the town, in the shadow of the cathedral. Once again the UK was well represented throughout the conference with speakers, posters and of course a booth with information from all of the UK and Ireland federation partners.

GridTalk hard at work
The week was quite a short one as conferences go. Only two full days and two half ones. This meant the pace was pretty frenetic but also that all the content was both useful and interesting. Throughout the week the GridTalk team worked overtime to get blogposts, photos and videos all online during the conference.

However the User Forum wasn't the only thing which happened during the week for EGEE. There was also the volcano<. The resultant ash cloud cancelled all flights out of Stockholm and consequently stranding almost the entire conference in Sweden. This led to some interesting ways home to various parts of Europe for many travellers, their stories can be seen on the GridCast blog - http://gridtalk-project.blogspot.com/search/label/Travel%20Stories
