First TierA/Prototype Tier1 Hardware delivered
Wed 13 Mar 2002
The first of the UK BaBar Tier-A/Prototype LHC Tier-1 Centre hardware was delivered to RAL today. Three racks holding 156 dual cpu PCs arrived, a total of 312 1.4GHz Pentium III Tualatin cpus.
This is a big increase in power as the existing 250 cpus range from 450MHz to 1GHz. Each box has 1GB of memory, a 30GB internal disk and 100Mb ethernet. The PCs are clustered on network switches with up to 8x1000Mbit ethernet out of each rack. The racks are shown below waiting for power to be connected. The disk servers will be delivered next week and the new equipment should start to come into service in April. All of the equipment was supplied by Compusys ( www.compusys.co.uk ) as the result of a competitive tender. For a photograph of the hardware: http://www.gridpp.ac.uk/news/pics/2racks.jpg
