UK-HEP-GRID Networking activities at the Manchester HEP Group
R.Hughes-Jones, A. McNab, A.Forti
At Manchester we continue to develop a set of simple network testing tools that use UDP and TCP packets ober IP to measure the performance of the network. These have been used to measure the latence, throughput, packet loss and packet jitter over LANs, MANs and the SuperJanet III WAN. This information will allow us to understand the performance contributions of the end-systems hardware and software as well as the Network components, wich will act as a baseline for the Grid Studies.
We will join withUCL and other sites to investigate high performace data and ftp transport using multiple TCP streams. We are now in the process of getting a BaBar utility (BBFTP) running locally. This incorporates multiple TCP streams.
We are also working with DL to investigate the behaviour of traffic when QoS is enabled. This work will use their laboratory testbed as well as the Internet2 link to SLAC.
We have installed the Globus toolkit on 12 Linux PCs and are developing "rpm" files to simplify installation. To gain experience, we have already extended PAW to be Globus-aware, accessing data from various network locations.
