ssh-gsi RPM's for Linux

alpha-quality RPM's of ssh-gsi (both clients and server) for Globus 1.1.3 are available in the download directory. Please send comments, corrections or suggestions to Andrew McNab <mcnab@hep.man.ac.uk>

Notes

  • This is currently a beta quality release, in regular use at several UK HEP sites: please try them out and let me know about problems with them on your configuration.
  • The RPM's have been built to be installed after the Globus 1.1.3 RPM and the accompanying OpenSSL RPM (which installs into /opt/ssl.)
  • Keys and certificates are taken from /etc/grid-security - the Globus RPM will already have configured that directory for you with symbolic links to the /opt/globus/etc copies of keys, certificates and grid-mapfile.
  • The RPM's are based on ssh-1.2.27i-7.src.rpm from Zedz.net (formerly Replay.com) These are now quite hard to find and aren't distributed by Zedz themselves anymore. There are copies at mirror.ac.uk. They include all ssh security patches for Linux.
  • There are four RPM's available:
    • ssh-gsi-1.2.27-2i.i386.rpm - files needed by all ssh components. Installing this also creates the ssh host key pair
    • ssh-gsi-clients-1.2.27-2i.i386.rpm - ssh clients to connect to other machines
    • ssh-gsi-server-1.2.27-2i.i386.rpm - ssh server to allow connections from other machines (if you do not want other people to connect, do not install this RPM.)
    • ssh-gsi-extras-1.2.27-2i.i386.rpm - make_ssh_known_hosts and ssh-askpass programs
  • /usr/bin/ssh1 is not installed setuid root (GSI is disabled if it is setuid root)
  • Warnings are not displayed if connecting to a GSI-enabled ssh server using ordinary ssh authentification (these warnings are still visible if you run the ssh client with option -v)

(Up to the Globus on Linux pages.)
