The ATLAS UK Computing Project

Announcement of the ATLAS UK e-Science Training Course

Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 17:15:30 GMT
From: Roger Jones
Subject: ATLAS UK Computing Training Meeting
To: ATLAS-UK E-science project PIs; ATLAS UK Institute reps; other interested parties.

This message is to announce the ATLAS-UK E-science training course which will take place at NESC, Edinburgh, Monday 7 - Tuesday 8 Feb 2005.

This course will provide an introduction to the software of the ATLAS experiment. It is targeted at the large number of people in the UK ATLAS/E-science community who are currently trying to get to grips with the ATLAS software and development environment. The course aims to hasten the induction of newcomers into the culture of ATLAS software development. It will attempt to cover the knowledge required to become an effective developer and demonstrate how to achieve some typical developers' tasks. It will draw on the experiences of some recent adopters who are aware of the pitfalls and more experienced developers who have an in-depth knowledge of the framework. The course format will include presentations, discussions, demonstrations and hands-on tutorials.

Who should attend

ATLAS-UK E-science project staff are expected to attend this course. These people and any named university/lab staff who are also working on and report under the ATLAS-UK E-science project should register before 21st Jan.

After this date, if places remain, they will be offered to other ATLAS and GridPP developers on a first come, first served basis. This includes PhD students. There is room for 40 people on the course.

Costs

Break time refreshments and lunches will be provided during the course. Dinner will be provided on Monday night.

Travel expenses and accommodation will not be included. ATLAS-UK E-science project staff can claim these from the ATLAS-UK E-science budget via RAL. Other members of ATLAS or GridPP will not be funded by the ATLAS-UK E-science project, but should claim from their ATLAS travel budgets or group budget in the case of students. Note that for UK travel claimed through RAL, there is no per diem and receipts are needed. It is expected that people use the cheaper accommodation - the £70+ hotels are not for us!

There is plenty of accommodation available at £55 per night, and claims on the ATLAS travel budgets are expected not to exceed this.

Students should obtain funding from their universities.

Computing and Hands-on Training

There will be wireless access available at the course. Part of the course (approx 4 hours) will be a hands-on session in which you will learn how to run the atlas software from simulation through to analysis. This is limited to 20 places and is aimed at newcomers. Computers will be provided for this.

If you do not get a place in the hands-on session, you will have the option of following the course as a self-study exercise if you bring a laptop with you. Alternatively you may use the time to review and discuss any aspect of the course with other attendees. This option would suit those who already have some experience with the ATLAS software.
