GridPP @ Home

The GridPP@home team is GridPP's contribution to the LHC@home project.

LHC@home uses desktop PCs to run simulations of particles travelling around the LHC. The program uses the BOINC technology developed through SETI@home - it can fit on a single PC and requires relatively little input or output.

For LHC@home, each individual contributes their own desktop PC's power. But groups of individuals can join together to form teams, with LHC@home monitoring the work done by each team. We have formed a GridPP team, for members of GridPP (and their friends and families) to contribute to the project.

To join the GridPP team you should follow the instructions at http://lhcathome.cern.ch. This reduces to:

  • Download and installing software (Windows or GNU/Linux builds are available).
  • Configure a web proxy if needed. (This is not really mentioned in the instructions which are otherwise good.)
  • Attach to a project, the http://lhcatcern.cern.ch/lhcathome project in particular, through the BOINC software.
  • Join the GridPP team.

It took less then 10 minutes to set up both my linux desktop and windows laptop with the software.

Information and statistics is available now including how much useful work GridPP CPUs have been able to give to the LHC@home project.
