GridPP at The BA Festival of Science 2008

The BA Festival of Science is one of Europe's largest science festivals will visit Liverpool, European Capital of Culture '08, from 6 - 11 September.

The week long, jam packed programme offers the biggest celebration of science, engineering and technology in Europe. With loads of events for everyone, join us in and around Liverpool for talks, plays, debates, hands on activities and more. Find out about the science of superheroes, which Beatles memory is most magical and what happens when science and culture collide.

GridPP is organising two events at this years BA Festival of Science. They are Grid Computing in the UK and The Alchemist Cafe - Grids: The Future Of Scientific Computing.

Grid Computing in the UK

Grids are seen as the future of scientific computing but everyone has a different definition of what they are. So what Grids are being used in the UK? Who is using them and how? What are the differences in the infrastructures? Join Grid users to explore the work they've done using the Grid.

Science's appetite for computer resources in all areas of research is growing every day. In response to this the Grid a distributed computing system has been developed to help scientists get the computer power the need when they need it.

This series of talks are designed showcase the facilities available to researchers, the myriad of work being done in the UK on the Grid infrastructure and also to help get interested scientists started on the Grid

The Alchemist Cafe - Grids: The Future Of Scientific Computing

  • Date: 11/09/2008
  • Time: 17:30 – 19:00
  • Location: The Piazza, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral , Mount Pleasant, L3 5TQ (In C5 on this map of the campus)

Enabling Grids for eScience

The Alchemist Cafe

The scale of science gets bigger (or smaller) every year and each step requires more and more computing power. The newest particle accelerator, the LHC, is turned on this year in Switzerland and its computing requirements are immense. The solution particle physicists have devised is the Grid but can it solve all of science's computing problems?

This informal discussion in the style of the Cafe Scientifique movement will discuss the impact Grids are having on current research and their uses in the future.
